'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' Reveals Local Winning Family

Homeless female veterans benefit from The Jubilee House and soon will get new digs.

After much anticipation in the Fayetteville community, Barbara Marshall and her family were surprised with a knock on their door Thursday morning by the team from 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

The network program, which features the construction of a home for one chosen family each season, picked the Marshalls from five Fayetteville families under consideration. But this family will get more than just a roof over its head.

Marshall, a 15-year Navy veteran, is fighting to end homelessness among female veterans. Using her own money, Barbara started The Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House to support her cause: assisting veterans who are living on the streets despite a career of honorable service.

The Jubilee House offers support and services that provide life coaching to more than 30 homeless female veterans a week. Jubilee also houses up to three female veterans and their children at a time. The organization serves as an extended family for the women that often end up forming close bonds with one another through shared experience and mutual support.

Ultimately Barbara would like to live in the house with the residents she helps, to be an even greater integral part of their lives. She’d also like her son, who is developmentally delayed, to have a place where he can grow.

Extreme’s design team has just seven days to build a new Jubilee House for the Marshalls and the homeless female veterans it supports on a daily basis at 120 Langdon Street in Fayetteville. The new home will house multiple families and serve as a resource center for the many homeless female veterans needing assistance and support.

During the seven-day build, the Marshall family will be treated to a dream vacation at Walt Disney World. 'Extreme' team leader Ty Pennington and designers Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson, John Littlefield and Sabrina Soto will rebuild their home, with help from builder Blue Ridge Log Cabins and other community organizations and volunteers who will be working around the clock.

Community residents wanting to drive by will be taken by the site on a shuttle bus to avoid congestion. More details on parking will be available later today.
