Field of Honor Pays Tribute to Past and Present Veterans

Hundreds showed up Saturday to walk among the rows of full-sized Old Glory prominently displayed on the Airborne & Special Operations Museum's parade field.

From May 12 through June 30 over 900 flags were posted by volunteers at Fayetteville's 5th Annual Field of Honor on the  (ASOM) parade field.

The moving display is a personal tribute for those who have dedicated a flag to honor the service of an individual. The flags are each marked with the sponsoring person's name and that of the honoree.

Each flag represents a story. Some flags are for those who have sacrificed their life, while others are dedicated to current service members.

Saturday morning 10 flags were placed on the field as a tribute for those POW-MIAs by the local motorcycle rider veterans group, Rolling Thunder. Alongside those flags on the walkway, 10 flags honoring past and present veterans were placed to commemorate their service and sacrifice.

Residents can sponsor a flag for $25 through the Downtown Alliance and the ASOM. Non-residents can sponsor a flag on their website.

A registry book inside the museum designates the location of each flag sponsored. Family and friends have been milling around the site throughout the morning and afternoon to photograph the spectacular site.
