How does one obtain a secret clearance? I thought the job pays for it?

Typically, individuals already have a clearance. The process of getting one can take up to one year and costs over $5,000, that's the reason the government takes it seriously. Also, many about to retire from the military make sure it is updated so that they have it for the next 5-10 years without incurring the cost.
