What Needs to be Done to Unite the Country?
After what was a divisive election by all estimates, the country now has to heal. It also needs to move forward. So what can be done to achieve this?
After billions of dollars and almost two years of constant campaigning, there's very little difference in Washington. The Presidency, the House and the Senate remain as they have been since 2010. Despite all the rhetoric, no one party was given any overwhelming mandate by the voters. They are still each blaming the other side for the gridlock and the gridlock remains.
So where do we go from here? How do we come together?
What do you think our elected officials need to do to unite the country? What do we as individuals need to do to learn tolerance of each others views?

This is a very good question.
First, folks have to understand that President Obama is not a terrorist, anti christ, socialist or any other wack job names applied. Folks also need to know that he is an Amercian. He is also of mixed race (black and white). He was raised by white people so its very unlikely that he hates white people.
With that being said...
People need to not put so much stock in extremist talk radio and spin tv. A good example why folks should not is it is very misleading. Look no further than Rush, Dick Morris, Newt Gingrich, Hannity and so many others who led folks (even Romney) to believe he was going to win in a landslide.
Next, we need to stop focusing on nonsense and we all need to hold our elected officials feet to the fire for things that we are both for and against. See...Dems, Repubs and Indies did this for our local gov and we got rid of Airports and Beaudreaus. We can also do this at the national level as well. We are all Americans.
Lastly, we need to understand that even though we have differences we may not always get everything that we want. Compromise needs to be a good word instead of a bad one that leads to division. We need force our parties to work together for all of us.
The President is one man who leads hundreds in government. One man does not do it alone, and we need all working together for the greater good!
My two cents.....

It's difficult, because on some issues, there is not a middle ground or compromise. Abortion is one. How to fix the national debt is another. War is another. I have learned a lot by listening to conservatives, and from time to time lean toward a conservative viewpoint. It helps me to remember that there is no right or wrong, but only angles of reality. For a long time, I wanted out of the wars, but it took discussion with conservatives to realize that it would be irresponsible to those in Iraq and Afghanistan to simply pull out after starting such big projects there. It helps conservatives to hear that I am not pro-abortion and can see that I do see their perspective on that issue. I explain that I am pro-choice, and I explain why. We still disagree, but at least there is an acknowledgement of the truth on both sides. I think that helps.

Compromise: a settlement of differences reached by MUTUAL concessions.
And now the Dems are suggesting they allow America to fall over the "fiscal cliff" so they will be in a better position to get concessions from their Republican counterparts. What a way to treat America! Drive the country to ruin so they can further drive the country to ruin, then blame the other side. No wonder congress gets such low approval ratings. Yet as long as the Dems keep handing out entitlements, they are followed blindly into the abyss. So much for Hope and Change. Forward to the new American wasteland.

and for it to be a better place we would have to start with shuting the border on boths north and south ends and manning it as obama originally promissed in 1st election .
2nd . stop all free trade and ban all foreign products ,years ago it was 90%american and 10% foreign .today its mostly all foreign goods
obama voters cant compeate with a child in a sweat shop makin $3.80 a day where as here in a northern factory THAY were paid 20.5 an hour
that is why most factorys are shut down it didnt happen with bush ,it started over 40 years ago ,when clinton signed nafta and rattified it ,was the nail in tha coffin for soon to be obama voters . bush inherited what CLINTON did and what is coming is a trickel down effect .

3 . all illegals have to be rounded up and kicked out of country ,obama voters cant compeate with these workers ,there too strong physically and mentally .
all these jobs created under obama for union workers help the trades but dont help obama voters out . most joba are 90% mexican using bogus ss# thay pay in but dont collect at end of year nor at retirement will never draw a check ,its a winner for tha govern ,but obama voters cant compeate with a worker who comes out with a belt on and his shoes tied ,on time ! with a packed lunch and ready ..
even if u do see obama voters on tha job all there doin is working for a temp service ,pushin a broom sweeping up after mexicans that were on a break
4th the government will have to help all these factorys start back up creating all these goods that are foreign currently. go to walmart, fambily dolla or dolla general see where its made ! everything is foreign .

Well folks, it is now clear why Obama invoked executive order to conceal emails between Holder and the White House regarding Fast and Furious. It's not only because of the damning evidence that would be uncovered against Holder and Obama regarding this scandal, but also due to the damning evidence against Holder and Obama that would be uncovered regarding the whole Petraeus affair, which was going on at the same time.
The really unsettling thing is that these two scandals are probably just the tip of the iceberg in Obama's opaque but supposedly transparent Presidency.

Greg is wrong. Obama is all those things. He was raised in Indonesia and Hawaii, and neither of those places inculcates American values or cultures. Yes, I know Hawaii is a state. His mother was a socialist and gave him anti-American values and his father was goodness knows what. Obama was never exposed to traditional American values until he came to college in the continental US. And then his only associates were the whacko's of the period. Greg, quit being an advocate for this cult leader of the misfits and the moochers.

Wow! As long as everyone works with a closed mind, spewing the usual tropes of the ideological moment, nothing will change. Maybe if the name calling stopped, we could actually come together as AMERICANS, which by definition is a widely diverse group.

We'll never be united as long as we pursue so-called 'cultural diversity'--we're told that Latinos & Blacks elected Obama & that those of us opposed to his policies need to 'embrace' these folks--meaning we cave on our values & accept Little Mexico & Big Ghetto as separate entities. Over time, politicians & race baiters have 'Balkanized' this country--instead of immigrants (add illegals) assimilating to America, learning the English language & earning citizenship, thus greatly improving their chances of becoming productive taxpayers instead of adding to the welfare rolls, we spend millions translating everything into Spanish, for God's sake! Blacks are called African-Americans, continually hammered with the propaganda that they're owed something, & bashed if they even consider behaving 'American'--Jesse, Al, the NAACP, et al, see to it that they always have a whining constituency that'll vote democrat everytime a ballot is issued. Now those who built this country & made it the most successful on earth, are shunted aside, useful only for their productivity resulting in tax $$$ that the democrats can use to buy vote after vote, with no regard whatsoever for the consequences or whether this nation even survives as long as they stay in power. No, it's time to stop referring to Latinos & Blacks as anything but Americans & if they don't like it & prefer to be a people apart, then send 'em back to their respective 'roots'...

Nan- I agree. We are all supposed to be on the same team. Embrace your culture and your heritage, no problem. But we are all Americans. If you are a hyphenated American, you are no American at all, you are just someone who wants special consideration and generally something for nothing.
I refuse to use the term African -American because I think it negates everything that forward thinkers like MLK ever stood for. It intentionally segregates Black Americans from the rest of America and blockades the possibility of Black Americans ever being treated equally.

Thank you, Racer X--years ago, I lived in the once great city, Detroit--it was pre-civil rights, yet our next-door neighbors were black, many of my classmates, as well as teachers, were as well. We all spoke the same language, no 'ghetto or rap speak', & cherished the same values. We babysat each other's children, chatted over the backyard fence, they enjoyed our 'southern' cooking & we their 'yankee' fare. Some time ago, I was telling my husband about how race was never an issue & commented that I was embarrassed to say so, but that our black friends behaved 'white'--he quickly corrected me & said, 'No, they behaved American' & he was absolutely right. No race-baiting politician had come along to preach 'separation' aided by a willing media. It's a travesty that these groups are daily encouraged to BE separate--they're discouraged from adopting the American ethic that is (no, WAS), the impetus that made us the greatest nation in history--that of independence, self-reliance, responsiblity for family--those values that stand the test of time. How very sad it is to see a vast number of folks scammed into lives of dependency, lives that will never rise out of that dependency & know the joy & satisfaction of a life unencumbered by an 'I'm owed & I can't make it on my own' mentality...

Athens mama, I appreciate your candor and I think you hit some things on the head. When given a blind test of policies where the recipient did not know whether the policies were R or D, liberals mostly chose the conservative viewpoint. A good majority of liberals are probably more conservative than they think, and more conservatives thanyou think are liberla in their thinking as far as charitable giving etc... I think the problem lies in the fact that people have been sold a bill of goods for political gain. Politicians have liberals convinced that republicans are cold and distant when that couldn't be further from the truth and vice verse. Parties have sucked in the constituents that they think will keep them elected. Unfortunately, not all are as candid and willing to be humble and at least try to see the other side (several unyielding on here). What do you suggest?

When our elected officials step before a microphone and camera, they should act like statesmen. They should be respectful of the President, the cabinet, their fellow Congressional members, and speak to the American people with honesty. They should set a good example for all the people. The hate talk and base-baiting rhetoric is bad enough in campaigning, and for sure doesn't help pull the country together to reconcile differences once they're elected. Leave that game on the field. Maybe the main problem is that they're always campaigning - looking to the next election instead of the work they need to do now. If they don't respect each other publicly, how can they respect each other privately and work on the nation's problems together? And not just the problems, also the good ideas to implement. Ditto for individuals, and stop repeating the bumper sticker slogans - we've all heard them or seen them, so they're not new and don't solve anything. We as individual American citizens have a responsibility to be informed voters, to do our own study and research the issues through credible, fact-based sources.
