For the past 32 years, Discovery Diving Co., Inc. of Beaufort, NC has organized a Treasure Hunt in October. This year’s event is scheduled for October 20, 2012. Pirates, that is, divers come from all over the United States for this excursion. What do modern day treasure hunters hunt, you may ask. On this day, they hunt for shells, brightly colored oyster shells flung onto the rock jetty at Radio Island. Divers are limited to two shells each so there is plenty of bounty for everyone. Afterwards, the exhausted, but wealthy hunters return to a safe port, that is the Discovery Diving Dive Shop, to fill their bellies and view their loot. In the most orderly of manners, each possessor of a shell draws from a barrel full of prize cards. The loot is comprised of donations from local merchants and national manufactures and from national and international travel resorts. It’s totally “luck of the draw” for the most coveted of prizes. These prizes include hats, T-shirts, diving equipment, trips and many other goodies. Who knows what mysteries and surprises lie in wait for this year’s luckiest pirate, uh...diver.
Sign-up begins September 1st. For information on participating in this year’s event, contact Discovery Diving Company in Beaufort, North Carolina at 252-728-2265.
