Strawberry Picking in Fayetteville

Find your thrill on Gillis Hill.

Like most farms, it’s a family business and that is true for the century farm owned by the Gillis family off of Raeford Road. Business is good and many families can be seen filling up pints in the rows of strawberry fields, a classic summer pastime.

North Carolina strawberries are available for a seemingly fleeting period of time each year. Then, like the rest of the country, tar-heel folks are relegated to eating strawberries grown in North Carolina.

Actually, the strawberry season in our state is a little more than fleeting. In North Carolina, strawberries are hand planted between Thanksgiving and Christmas and then hand harvested in the early spring through May, the prime time for the sweet fruit.

Last year, the cool weather had delayed blooms and slowed growth by a couple of weeks. Strawberries start in most Southern areas in late April, and in mid May up north. In order to produce good local strawberries, producers depend on ideal spring weather conditions.
