Moses Mathis Honored by 500 at His Funeral

Fayetteville honored Moses Mathis at his funeral today at Raeford's AME Zion Church.

Upwards of 500 family, friends and supporters showed up for Moses Mathis' funeral service Monday afternoon in Raeford before being buried at the Sandhills Veterans Cemetery.

Moses Mathis, 76, a local veteran was knick-named Fayetteville's "Bicycle Man" died in his sleep last Monday morning at home. His spouse, Ann Mathis said that he had been battling congestive heart failure.

Mathis was a parish member at AME Zion Church and his pastor Rev. Fredrick Hendly gave the eulogy while other spoke their sentiments of the man who had a tremendous impact through his service in our community.

In his 23rd year in his ministry thousands of Fayetteville kids picked out new, or nearly new bicycles the week before Christmas. It was not uncommon for lines of families to form along the sidewalks outside of his buildings as the Fayetteville Police directed traffic.

Mathis along with his team of volunteers accepted donated bikes throughout the year and then restored them to give to children whose families cannot afford to buy a bicycle. His wife Ann said the ministry will continue this year but does not its fate after the Christmas season.
