Operation: Coming Home Breaks Ground On Sixth Hero Home

Volunteer project begins work on home for U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nathan Rimpf in Raleigh.

Operation: Coming Home , a joint volunteer project by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County (HBA) and various Triangle area nonprofits and businesses, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the organization’s sixth Hero Home on Aug. 8 in the Renaissance Park neighborhood. The recipient selected for the sixth home is U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nathan Rimpf, platoon leader of the 2nd Battalion 16th Infantry, who will reside in a custom-designed house built by Chesapeake Homes.

Rimpf was severely injured by stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) while serving in Afghanistan on July 8, 2012. Since that time, he has made tremendous improvements and can now walk and run with his new prosthetic legs. Rimpf is recovering and undergoing therapy at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and looks forward to living in his new home that will provide him with easy accessibility to all rooms. Completion of the home is projected for mid-November 2013.

“We are excited to start work on our sixth Hero Home and look forward to its completion this fall,” said Tim Minton, executive vice president of the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County and board president of Operation: Coming Home. “It is evident that Nathan is a man of great drive and determination, and he represents to us the many men and women who sacrifice their lives to fight for our freedom.”
