Army Identifies Ranger Killed in Parachute Mishap

Pfc. Christopher P. Dona was killed Thursday during routine parachute training at Fort Stewart.

The Army has identified a Ranger who was killed Thursday in a parachute accident at Fort Stewart, according to an Associated Press report.

Pfc. Christopher P. Dona, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, was found dead on the ground with his parachute suspension lines and harness straps wrapped around his neck, according to the AP.

Dona's parachute seemed to deploy normally during the jump, an Army spokesman told the AP. However, wind filled the parachute when Dona landed and he was dragged about 350 feet across the ground. By the time other Rangers reached him, he was already unconscious, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The Army is trying to determine whether Dona became entangled in the parachute during the jump or after hitting the ground, according to the AP.

Dona, 21, was a Massachusetts native and had recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan, the AP reported.
