Local Attorney Charged with Embezzlement

$2,132 was the amount embezzled

 

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Property Crimes Detectives have charged a Fayetteville attorney with embezzling money from the Democratic Men’s Club.

Phillip Hunter Gilfus, 32, of 727 Duck Court, surrendered to authorities early Wednesday morning and was released from the Detention Center under a two thousand dollar, secured bond.

An investigation determined that between November 15, 2011 and July 19, 2012 Gilfus embezzled $2,132 from the Cumberland County Democratic Men’s Club, by writing checks made payable to himself.  A total of ten checks were written on an account assigned to Capital Bank. 

Gilfus, who was the club treasurer at the time, is charged with embezzlement.
