Birthday Cake Competition to Celebrate the Army's 237 Years
The 2012 theme: America's Army, the Strength of the Nation
Some creative military spouses and a servicemember turned on their ovens and mixed up some beautifully adorned birthday cakes for the contest at the Auditorium on Tuesday, June 11.
Congratulations to the first place winner, Natasha McDonald, an Army spouse and owner of Kakes by McTasha.
News anchor Gilbert Baez was the emcee for the event and a panel of judges from Fayetteville, Fort Bragg and around North Carolina sampled each cake judging them on four criteria.

LTC Angela Funara came up with the contest idea after watching the FOOD TV network and thinking about how to ring in the Army's 237th birthday in a traditional way.
"I don't have near the skills it takes to decorate any of these, though I love to bake," said Funara.

One of the bakers told the crowd that she ran out of butter and powdered sugar while making her cake. After she went to the store and got home to unpack her grocery items, she realized the cashier had left out the butter and powdered sugar! As resourceful military spouses often do, they make it happen - which means the kids were somehow part of that solution.
