Advanced Placement Program Grant for Military Families Awarded to Local High School

Jack Britt High School will expand their AP Progam this fall thanks to grant money from Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).

On Wednesday, June 12, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), will announce that its highly successful Advanced Placement* (AP) program for military families is being expanded to benefit many military connected students.

The addition of Jack Britt High School was made possible through a grant from DoDEA of approximately $840,000 over a three-year period.

The ceremony takes place at Fayetteville's E.E. Smith High School, 1800 Seabrook Road, in the media center at 10a.m.

The Cumberland County School (CCS) system is the fifth largest school district in North Carolina and the 78th largest in the nation. The system serves more than 52,000 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th in 87 schools. The federal government is the largest employer in the county, followed by the CCS. More than 11,500 (21.9 percent) CCS’ students are military connected. The CCS serves a very diverse student population with students from more than 44 different countries. More than 80 different native languages are spoken by students in the CCS.

NMSI’s AP program for military families is currently in 52 schools in 15 states. Next year, further expansion is anticipated to reach more than 70 schools in 18 states.
