Fort Bragg Honors 5 Fallen at Memorial Service

Soldiers killed in Afghanistan during the month of June were honored on Wednesday.

Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne Division held their monthly memorial to honor five of their paratroopers that lost their lives in June. The memorial service was held at the Main Post Chapel on Wednesday, July 11, at 11a.m. CH (LTC.) Barnett provided the invocation and opening comments and 1LT. Andre read the names and lit the candles before LTC Arnold and Maj. Sherwood gave their Commanders' Remarks. Fallen Paratroopers Honored Cpl. Nicholas H. Olivas, 20, of Fairfield, Oh., died on May 30, 2012. 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. 1LT. Mathew G. 4th Brigade Soldier Killed on Patrol in Afghanistan

Fort Bragg loses another soldier in May bringing the count to five for the month.

A paratrooper from Fort Bragg was killed after being injured in an improvised explosive device blast in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced Thursday night that Cpl. Nicholas Olivas, 20, of Fairfield, Ohio, died May 30 in Zharay, Afghanistan. Olivas served as an Infantryman with Charlie Troop, 4th Squadron, 73rd Calvary Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Olivas joined the Army in 2010 and this was his first deployment to Afghanistan. The soldier had been deployed since February. Awards received by Olivas include: the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service …
