Residents of North Carolina and more than 30 other states have filed petitions to secede from the United States. Residents of Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, New York, Michigan, Texas and other states have filed the petitions under the "We The People" program, featured on the White House website, according to the Huffington Post. The North Carolina petition, which launched Nov. 9 and had more than 21,000 signatures Tuesday afternoon, quotes from the Declaration of Independence: "...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..." …

North Carolina prepares for Hurricane Irene, which could reach Outer Banks by Saturday morning.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set up staging areas for its incident management assistance teams at Fort Bragg, N.C., and elsewhere across the region, according to administrator Craig Fugate. FEMA has truckloads of water, meals, durable medical goods, generators and other supplies ready in the event that governors make a direct request for assistance, Fugate said. North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue has already declared a state of emergency, and evacuation orders have been issued for parts of the Outer Banks, where a hurricane watch is in effect.
